My first Saturday in china,
Spent in kaifaqu, buzzed we cabbed back to her place...oh sorry let me get you up to speed.
So Friday was fun, wasn't quite what I thought it was going to be, thought we were going all out Thunder Bay style (for those of you who are unfamiliar, means loud music, bright lights, dancing and 5 am pizza service) well I was dressed in regular Thunder Bay party attire :p white jeans, plaid shirt, cowboy boots and Spiderman mask/glasses <3 we got on the train, had a couple ice cold sodas, then got off the train (ya rebel rebel :p ) then ventures through the neons and store fronts to a place located across the street of the busy square which was called "Mr.Beer". Beside it was a food eatery/bakery called euro-bake, amazing pizza I must say!!!
It was embarassing that I thought we were all going to get our crazy on and decompress when I realized our admin staff was present...holy embarassing, I been embarrassed as spiderman for different reasons before but not like this, they stared and laughed, but then I was introduced and we made jokes, was all good, normally when I represent a style, I represent it all night, that night people were just far to mellow and I was not really feeling the glasses, took them off and then someone else was like awwww you took them off!? They asked if I could keep them on because it was cute and they wanted pictures with me, etc. I agreed, but honestly was not feeling them. Night was going slow, I got just as tired as I was drunk, people were not as lively, the music wasn't bad but I have been spoiled by years of perfectly executed shows and covers so it was like ughhhhhh.
We ventured through back alleys, past "massage parlours" and other bars in kaifaqu that led to a place called "The Hideout" it was a great night, had a good time, met lots of people, sad when a friend is attacked by some jerk off mainlanders. But hey, that's the nature of the beast when you are an "outlander" as we are deemed.
The bar is two storeys, very small, no real seating inside the bar, a billiards table in a small crammed upstairs, one bathroom for both sexes which led to the use of back alleys and indefensibly the reason for the attack on our friend.
The servers and bar owner "Lilly" are all super nice! However it's a bar that fluctuates beer prices, meaning, the beer you paid for may not always make it to your hand, or may not be the same price as it was when you come back for another...ya, the drinking can be expensive, people in mainland china don't normally get as hammered as we were partially, through the night. I'm going to blame a lot of that on how tired I was -_-
The night went on, people left, group got quiet, I started getting bored so hopped in for a game or two of pool, we needed a spare player for a moment after awhile. Courtnay and some other American teachers were standing around, we offered games out to them as it was a free table and fun game, they all respectfully declined except Courtnay who was on my team. some light flirting and kindness was passed between us while she destroyed the other team and made me think like ya, she is so out of my league, what would she ever want with me, she is totally being a nice person right now and I'm acting like a jackass, stop flirting. She actually had to go before I could really flirt or anything back but she said being new in town she wouldn't mind showing me around since she had already lived here for a year. I was stunned and then thought, wow she is the nicest person ever but maybe it is just an empty gesture. I couldn't give her my fb as she wouldn't understand and was being hurried; she didn't want my number as she couldn't type it in her phone as well as she thought she would not actually remember to message me the next day; so she gave me her number and told me to let her know when I'm available.
The night continues on, I totally thought it was an "oops I have you the wrong number? I'm sorry :(" -not sorry though, but I totally scored a conversation with a potential new friend at the very least :) no idea where she lived or anything really. Hung out with the boys and just when it started feeling like a tbay night, the wife called and buddy had to go home :( well I didn't have any money left after buying so much bloody beer...so I was stuck; had to go as well, got a fancy ashai beer pint out of it though!
Saturday though!
-Carm
