Dandong Broken Bridge Tourist Attraction (2023)

The Dandong Broken Bridge has been a tourist attraction we have visited on numerous occasions, since I moved to China, and my first trip there with Marty Avery and our driver, Autmn, to the point now where my son is interested in going to visit as a part of some normal routine that he has established when we go to visit my in-laws in Dandong.

Gratefully, every visit has yielded the opportunity to introduce to someone who hasn't been there before or witness some sort of development. Last year the development was the construction of the knick-knack shop with Dandong tourist apparel (yes-I partake). This year the interesting and relatively unfortunate development has been the closure of the damaged site of the bridge. Some believe its based on maintenance others believe it is political.

Politics are basically why there is a broken bridge in Dandong. The Americans bombed out the bridge that was created to connect Dandong (PRC) and North Korea, during the Korean War.

In Dandong you can read more about the Korean War and its impact on that region a the North Korean War Remnants Museum-not much translated into English.

This year the bridge area closed would have looked onto the North Korean border and the river as it flows beneath the currently used bridge that was built to connect Dandong and North Korea.

However, there was a sign simply saying it was off limits.

At this point, the border for travel between North Korea and China is reopening and many people have been anticipating this since it originally closed in 2020. Check out Young Pioneer Tours if you are looking to go out that way and check out North Korea. From what I hear, the beer is pretty great!
