Five countries, Four Weeks Pt.6 "Koh Phi Phi-Bangkok"
Koh Phi Phi was
indeed a beautiful island, right from the moment we stepped off the boat till the second we got back on to leave. Again,
everyone seems to be asking for a dollar here, a dollar there. It becomes
regular yet annoying. The island itself is very small but so incredibly easy to
get lost on. Every back alley takes you to the same main bays but how far down
the bays you are is the tricky part of figuring out your location. We stayed at
a shady looking guesthouse called “Oasis Guesthouse” which was not too
expensive but certainly didn’t seem all that secure considering the windows were
just glass panes and there seemed to be a gecko or two which were always
running around. Kyle and I roomed together while Jesse and Krista were sharing
a room. I mostly remember from the time spent in that room, Kyle telling me
again and again “rather have geckos than anything else…” I looked at him as if
he was getting ill. He continued to explain that geckos are two things, faster
than scorpions and smarter than insects. Geckos chase and eat scorpions, as
well as also aware that small warm crevices in or on other living organisms are
not smart places to be. True or not, if they could get into the hotel room,
something was wrong in my mind. Nothing turned out being wrong, the hotel
service was great but it was certainly a bamboo bungalow feeling with a
predominantly cold shower. Something I found extremely interesting about Koh
Phi Phi aside from the array of individuals you will meet there at full moon
parties; was the “Reggae Boxing Bar”, fight another tourist for a bucket. Thai
buckets are watered down Jack and Coke. The fights are 3 minutes long with 1
minute bouts and run throughout the course of the night. A person can see all
sorts of fighters, and drunks in the ring. They gear people up with padding
however it’s a no mouth guard necessary policy, people need their wits about
them. A concussion is inevitable if someone is inexperienced. The bar and its
patrons are quite nice, try to build fighters back up after they step out of
the ring and even give participants a dinky little medal (totally kept mine).
From Koh Phi Phi
we boated back to Phuket and hopped on a plane later in the afternoon to
Bangkok where we would stay for a couple days. Two days and two nights were all
we needed while there. Long enough to check out the Grand Palace, Wats and
floating markets. No matter where people are in Bangkok they will find a party,
bar, or night market. It really just seems like the kind of place that never
shuts down. Stay away from individuals “just trying to help,” when they are
giving directions or attraction times without inquiries made first. For
whatever reason, certain individuals are always trying to misguide tourists. Cabs
are ridiculously expensive, so people should choose a part of town to stay in
that is closer to what they want to see and do when staying there.
